Terry would be likely to remain club captain with another player assuming the on-pitch captaincy.

Terry, whose current contract expires on June 30, in January said he would be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season. “First, I’m happy that they are in contact”, the Dutchman said, “and that they are talking”.

Last weekend, it seemed likely John Terry would never play for Chelsea again.

Terry revealed on Friday that he needs time to consider a contract he says would require him to accept “a different role”, and the 35-year-old stopped short of confirming that he would sign in an emotional speech to Chelsea supporters after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with champions Leicester City at Stamford Bridge.

With the Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, looking on from his private box, Terry, who had watched the game from behind the dugout, addressed the fans on a microphone and said: “I’ve said for a long time I want to finish my career here”.

“This season we are all aware what other clubs can do as well”. The former England global has maintained throughout that he wants to stay at Chelsea. “He wants to care for everything, nutrition, everything”.

“I want to stay”, Terry said after fans sang his name at the end of the match.

Terry wrote on Instagram on Monday: ‘Thank you all so much for your unbelievable support yesterday and all season.

Guus Hiddink, whose second caretaker spell ended following the Leicester draw, brought stability, but had just one home win in the Premier League. You’ve been a big part of the best moments in my life in this stadium.

“For me, it was better to put him in the squad”.

“I have full confidence they will go up to where they belong and that is fighting for silverware and being at least in fourth, third, second or first position”, said Hiddink. I met the owner Roman Abramovich here, and also when I went out all the people – the fans, the Chelsea fans – it was awesome.

“For us Chelsea fans, this season has been a hard one”.

“Champions League will be a very good experience for all my players”. And then I can realise what happened this season.

“If you’d said that at the start of the season everyone would be saying “no chance”. No-one has played Champions League (before). It will be a very good atmosphere with good music.
