Scottish National Party wins election

That is not enough for the SNP to have an outright majority, which means that a political alliance of some sorts will be needed to further its intentions.

Lacking an overall majority, she will need the support of other parties to be re-elected as First Minister and to pass legislation.

Labour was pushed to third place in Scotland – where it was once dominant.

He said: “They have got to make a clear and unambiguous statement that another referendum must be off the table for the next five years in order to respect the referendum result”.

Labour Party politician Sadiq Khan, the son of a bus driver from Pakistan, led London’s mayoral race Friday, opening a lead over Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith that left him poised to be the city’s first Muslim mayor.

 The elections were seen as a key test of Mr. Corbyn’s leadership.

The Lib Dems went into the night at risk of becoming the fifth force in Scottish politics, behind the Greens.

Barring a few exceptions, it has been the SNP that has come out comfortably on top. In the 2010 United Kingdom general elections, Labour’s Willie Bain was 1-to-500 on to hold his seat in Glasgow North East. On the whole, however, the trend for the SNP replacing Labour as the party of Scotland’s working classes has continued unabated.

A BBC projection suggested that Labour would win 31 per cent of the vote share nationally compared to 30 per cent for the Conservatives.

Labour gained some solace from Scotland’s eight regions, which offer a route for parties to gain seats to counter the disproportionality of first-past-the-post constituencies.

There was a stunning gain from Labour in Dumfriesshire, which the party had held for over a decade.

They did well in the list seats, too. Davidson hailed an “incredible result” after she unexpectedly took Edinburgh Central from the SNP by just 610 votes.

Despite another disappointing night in Scotland for the Lib Dems, there were a couple of surprises.

Shetland MSP Tavish Scott and Orkney MSP Liam McArthur could have been exposed to guilt by association, but they are both popular in their own right in their respective constituencies.

In North East Fife, the party’s leader, Willie Rennie, ran out the comfortable victor, while the party also won Edinburgh Western.

He became a co-ordinator for the Yes campaign during the Scottish independent referendum.

In areas that are more middle class and which voted No in the referendum, the Conservatives have done particularly well apart from a couple of exceptions, namely the Liberal Democrat gains on the mainland. Within this structural fusion of class and constitutional politics, Scottish Labour is struggling to articulate a vision that fits into this new reality.

Nicola Sturgeon has vowed to press ahead with her controversial “named person” scheme as the Tories targeted it as the first casualty of minority government. “We congratulate all new and returning MSPs on their election and will shortly extend invitations to them to meet with NFUS members across the country – either on farms throughout the summer or at upcoming agricultural shows, including the Highland. We didn’t. We hung on and we grew support in a lot of places”, Jeremy Corbyn, head of Labour, said.
