ME police officers caught the incident on their dashcams, including the Portland Police Department who watched the fireball as it came down.

Sgt. Tim Farris was on patrol for the Portland, Maine, Police Department watching for speeders when his dashcam caught the fiery streak.

The post jokingly said that the officers observed either a meteor or an alien spaceship. At approximately 12:50 AM, a meteor, streaking across the night sky, flared up into a very bright fireball, also known as a bolide. “I was driving east on the mass pike heading home when there was flashing behind me, then the sky in front of my auto started to light up”.

“Let’s hope the visitors are friendly”, the police department Facebook post read. It’s vibrancy is due to the larger size of the debris burning up in the atmosphere.

Boston resident Mark L. reported to AMS that the fireball was “like a lighting strike in slow motion lasting 2 to 3 seconds”.
