Google launches shopping ads on image search

That means when shoppers are browsing through Google Image search results, they’ll now see ads for related products, Google explained in an announcement on Monday.

Get ready to start seeing advertisements in Google’s image search. Google says this is about facilitating on-the-spot purchases – but as Jon Fingas of Engadget says, “there’s no denying that this is partly about snubbing Amazon”.

They also announced a few more things, so check it out.

Ads make up much of Google’s profits every year, so it should be a surprise to no one that the company will expand them to more of its products. Mr Hoffelder observes: “Google has ignored its own instructions, proving once and for all that even in a company which used to have the motto “Don’t be evil”, money is still ultimately the boss”. Of course, buyers can also visit Google Shopping to search for a product, but including ads on Images offers an additional route to a possible sale.

Google says advertisers’ ads are automatically eligible to be displayed on Google Image Search as part of the Google Search Network. To capitalize on local search intent, retailers will now be able let users select “buy online pickup in store” by using store pickup links to local product pages. The second aspect, buy online and pick up in store, will need to be added by the retailer to the local product page before it is live, but once added, anyone landing on that ad or product page will see that the product is available as an option to pick up locally.

Upon searching by location and store, users can browse all inventory for that store.
