Joe Root has averaged over 50 in Tests during the last one year and has been England’s best performer in all formats.

Among other awards handed out on the night, Somerset’s Anya Shrubsole won the England Women’s Cricketer of the Year award for the first time.
In 50-over cricket, Root plundered 723 runs in his 18 innings a year ago, including three centuries, two of which came in the memorable series victory over New Zealand on home soil.

European Central Bank chief executive officer Tom Harrison said: “It’s been a remarkable year for our global teams – the Women’s Ashes attracted record attendances and unprecedented levels of media interest, our physical disability team won the inaugural Physical Disability World Cup in Bangladesh, and our men’s team regained the Ashes, won a major Test series in South Africa, and reached the final of the World T20 tournament”.
His attitude was questioned in the wake of England’s 5-0 mauling by Australia but Root’s form in Test cricket since has been stunning – 2,451 runs at an average of 68.08. You don’t get lazy; you don’t rest on your laurels.
“The reason you play is to contribute to England winning”, says Root.
He also scored big runs during the away series against Pakistan, and managed to muster together 121 against Sri Lanka during the fateful World Cup defeat at Wellington. I was very keen to put that right. ‘I knew then how much work I was going to have to put in if that was going to be the case.
Charlotte Edwards, who recently announced her retirement from worldwide cricket after 20 years as an England player, won the Women’s Player of the Year award voted for by England fans. “And, when things are going well, you think about that and you make the most of it”. “More importantly, it is great to be involved with this group of players”. These personal awards are great, but they don’t mean as much as the ones you win together. You make it count. Not only is he a key part of the side in all formats, but he has a history of back trouble and is earmarked as England’s next Test captain which could yet come sooner than the 2017-18 Ashes that Alastair Cook is targeting.
