The 52-year-old Texan told authorities he fired his gun three times at the armadillo around 3 a.m.in Marietta, Tex., near Highway 77. Reports do not indicate the condition of the armadillo that was shot.

Deputies are investigating the incident as “a possible accidental shooting”.

A Cass County, Texas, man was just released from Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler, Texas, after a Thursday morning shooting mishap involving an East Texas armadillo, said Sheriff Larry Rowe.

That is the lesson that one local man learned the hard way when he landed in the hospital with a bullet wound after trying to shoot one of the hardy armor-plated critters.

Sheriff Larry Rowe countered the explanation, saying the bullet more likely bounced off a rock. However, a few armadillos are also known to protect themselves by digging or fleeing into thorny patches.

It was not the first time a bullet ricocheting off an armadillo injured a person. The 74-year-old lady was inside the trailer located 100 yards away from where her son-in-law tried to shoot the armadillo. The bullet, according to the report, went through many obstacles before hitting the old lady, who was sitting inside their trailer.

Unfortunately, the well-being of the armadillo has not been confirmed.
