‘Captain America’ Still Holding Strong at US and Global Box Office

Globally, Civil War was at $943M as of Monday morning, meaning it should become the first Captain America movie to break a billion by around Thursday. It earned $17.8 million at 3,970 locations in its fifth weekend out.

The latest action-packed Captain America film stayed atop the North American box office this weekend, according to industry figures released yesterday.

Zootopia crossed the $330 million mark after being in theaters for over 70 days. South Korea is second with $60.1 million, followed by the United Kingdom at $46.7 million, Mexico at $39.2 million and Brazil at $32.9 million.

Civil War has already bested its predecessor, The Winter Soldier, at the box office, and is on track to be one of the MCU’s most successful efforts to date. The movie grossed $84.2 million outside of the US, and when adding on its domestic draw, the total from across the world adds up to nearly $941 million. “Money Monster” only carries a 56 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

Unfortunately, none of this material affects the fact that in American movies, especially thrillers, nearly every problem except the sexual-romantic is resolved only by violence, and Captain America: Civil War every so often indulges in the usual vehicle chases, big orange explosions, shootouts, and gundowns, exceptionally well done as to special effects and stunts, but nothing new. Disney’s “The Jungle Book” collected $4.2 mn on Friday, but many expect it to finish in second place ahead of ‘Money Monster.’ Wherever it falls, the film is on track to top $300 mn this weekend.

In limited release, distributor A24 also scored big with The Lobster, a comedy about relationships starring Colin Farrell from director Yorgos Lanthimos.
