GOP machismo raging: Rick Perry challenges Trump to ‘pull-up contest’

The former governor and Republican presidential candidate earned plaudits for delivering thoughtful speeches on financial reform and race relations, seized the opportunity to tussle with bombastic foe Donald Trump and parted ways with half of the abuse-of-power indictment hanging over him.

The former Governor of Texas is a strong opponent of LGBT rights – even claiming that the Boy Scouts of America are “better off” not allowing openly gay leaders.

US presidential candidate Rick Perry though warns for the next economic crisis if Wall Street is not kept under control and reprimanded for the bad behavior has also suggested that the policy makers should give breathing room for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. “We’re about the same size as Canada or Australia… and unquestionably, did a really good job”, Perry said of his tenure in Texas.

Perry was speaking at an event hosted by the Committee to Unleash Prosperity.

Perry himself struck a populist note, telling the New York crowd that “banks made a lot of mistakes” and “some financiers intentionally misled investors and customers”. “To be quite frank, they were screwed”.

Perry also discussed other ideas for requiring large banks to hold additional capital as a cushion against emergencies and shortfalls, but the reference to issues historically related to Glass-Steagall is the one that generated the buzz. “Let’s get a pull-up bar out there and let’s see who can do the most pull-ups”, which was met by laughter and a round of applause.

Well, if you want to put it slightly more kindly, you could have just said erratic and unpredictable but everybody knows that in the lead-up to this debate it’s going to be all about Trump.

“Democrats have this 1915 view of the 2015 economy”, Mr. Perry said, taking a passing jab at Ms. Clinton and “big city liberal mayors” for trying to clamp the growth of start-ups like Uber.

He’ll need to rise above all the noise in the Republican Party’s crowded field if he is to get big money from around the country.

For Perry especially, the polling could endanger his highest-profile opportunity yet to show off what he has been telling everyone who will listen over the past several months: He is not the Rick Perry of the 2012 race.
