Mets’ Noah Syndergaard takes Dodgers counterpart deep — twice

With the Mets trailing 2-1 in the fifth with two on and no outs, Syndergaard failed to get a bunt down twice, and received the green light for a 2-2 pitch.

Noah Syndergaard, most appropriately nicknamed “Thor”, brought his hammer to the plate Wednesday against Kenta Maeda and the Dodgers, showing Mets fans Bartolo Colon isn’t the only pitcher who can blast home runs.

“I don’t think I ever hit two home runs when I played little league”, Syndergaard said after the game. But he took Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda deep when he led off the third inning, jumping on a first-pitch fastball and sending it over the wall in right-center field.

The four RBI for Syndergaard tied a record for a pitcher at Dodger Stadium, done five other times, the last by Jake Peavy for San Diego on July 26, 2006.

Syndergaard becomes the second pitcher in Mets history with two home runs in a game.

There was no chance Syndergaard – who threw 95 pitches – would return to pitch the ninth.

Syndergaard wasn’t too shabby on the bump either.

Syndergaard allowed two runs on six hits and one walk in eight innings. “He’s a big strong kid”. Before this game, Noah Syndergaard has made 30 career starts, racked up 215 strikeouts (7.2 per start) and was 9 in the majors with 215 strikeouts since 1913 in a player’s first 30 major league games.

Seager homered on a slider in the third inning to make it 1-1. Syndergaard had allowed only one homer in 38⅓ innings this season entering the start. 400 (6-for-15) with three homers, two doubles and seven RBIs.

Mets: LHP Steven Matz will miss his next turn in the rotation Saturday at Colorado because his elbow has flared up.

Steven Matz said Saturday that he would not be throwing off a mound this weekend, in advance of seeing a doctor in NY on Monday, according to an ESPN Now update from team reporter Adam Rubin.

Walker returned to the starting lineup on Wednesday after missing three starts with a bruised right shin.

FLORES TO DL: Wilmer Flores will head to the disabled list with a left hamstring injury. On the road trip, the Mets are 4-3 with four games still remaining.
