‘Civil War’ Finishes Second Weekend with $72.5M

It shouldn’t really come as much surprise to be fair, as if any film of 2016 seemed guaranteed to break a billion it was Civil War, with the presence of a number of Avengers in it, and very strong reviews leading in.

Bringing in an estimated $72.5 million compared to its $179 million debut, the 59% drop is consistent with the Avengers Age of Ultron one weekend drop and 10 points less than Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice. While we didn’t think the film was that incredible, those at the film festival gave a four minute standing ovation at the end of Cannes premiere on May 12th.

“Money Monster”, the Jodie Foster-directed thriller headlined by George Clooney and Julia Roberts, collected $15 million to open in third place. The film, which stars Kevin Bacon, brought in $5.2 million from only 1,755 screens to take fourth place.

American action movie “Criminal” grossed 51.7 million yuan to land in third place after its release on May 13.

Latest installment of Marvel Cinematic Universe has earned $295.9 million domestically in just two weeks.

The film, which has been a critical hit as well as a commercial smash, makes it two weeks at the top of the USA box office and faced no challenge from the films below it. It earned $17.8 million at 3,970 locations in its fifth weekend out. Civil war will thus become the sixth superhero title to achieve this benchmark. “Money Monster” only carries a 56 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Rounding out the top five was the dramedy “Mother’s Day” which added another $3.26 million to its tally.
