Sara Ramirez Leaves ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ After 10 Seasons

In a statement released to Us Weekly on the same day that Grey’s aired its season 12 finale, the actress – who joined the show late in season 2 – thanked her colleagues and series creator Shonda Rhimes, adding that she was looking forward to some down time. In other words, Callie can go be with Penny in NY and still be with her daughter, which is exactly what she wanted in the first place. “Shonda’s been so incredible to work for and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my Love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast & crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!” Surgeon Callie Torres is turning in her scalpel at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Ramirezs performance in that show so wowed the executives, that they offered her a pick of roles in any program on the network, and Ramirez chose Greys Anatomy. She also expressed how inspiring Sara Ramirez is. The only people that may not be happy are Grey’s fans that don’t want to see Callie, or Sara Ramirez, go. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara.

On Thursday night’s Season 12 finale, Callie mended her relationship with her ex-wife, Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), regained custody of their daughter and seemingly would make plans to head to NY to be with her estranged girlfriend, Penny Blake (Samantha Sloyan). “She will always have a home at Shondaland”.

While the storyline left a return possible for Callie, Sara had already sparked rumours she would be leaving with a tweet back in April (16), when she wrote: “That’s a wrap for Doctor #CallieTorres #Season13 #GreysAnatomy #ThankYou all for an enriching & unforgettable #Rollercoaster ride!” She and Arizona Robbins (together known as Calzona to fans) began dating and were quickly tested when Callie came out to her father and he disowned her. In the previous two seasons, the show lost Patrick Dempsey when his character, Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd, was killed near the end of season 11. No matter what happens we hope Ramirez and Callie return to Grey’s someday.
