City crews planned to demolish the west side of the bridge on Friday morning.
He told police he had been able to drive under the bridge eastbound earlier in the day, and had assumed the bridge was high enough driving westbound, OKCFD reported. “There is a height difference of four inches from the eastbound lanes and westbound lanes; 14′ 8″ to 14′ 4” respectively.
May Avenue and all lanes on Northwest Expressway were closed following the accident.
Video from the scene showed the semi-truck trapped under the debris, but police said the driver was not injured.
Overpasses like the one that collapsed at Northwest Expressway and May Avenue aren’t created to withstand impact from a vehicle, a road and bridge expert said Thursday. May Avenue and all lanes of traffic on the expressway were closed afterward, Peters said.

She added that engineers were investigating the damage, but there was no estimate on how long repairs would take.
