Pardew urges players to cement their names in Palace’s history

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal believes winning the FA Cup will be more memorable for his players than qualifying for the Champions League.

Manchester United are understood to be considering offering Louis van Gaal a different job at Old Trafford in order to clear the way for Jose Mourinho.

The closest Palace have come previously was in the same competition in 1990 when Pardew played in both matches as United won a replay 1-0 after a 3-3 draw at the first game at Wembley.

The club’s three-year barren run has coincided with the retirement of manager Alex Ferguson, who led the club to 13 Premier League title, five FA Cup and two Champions Leagues during his 26 years at the helm.

“I’ve read that the last FA Cup was 2004 so it’s a long time ago”.

Do you think Mourinho should replace Van Gaal, even if United win the FA Cup? “When you win silverware, it’s important for the players, because a qualification is not a title”.

Alan Pardew has claimed this Crystal Palace team he manages has a better chance of lifting the FA Cup than the 1990 vintage he played in.

The boring performances have also been questioned by several pundits and former players, with ex-England global Paul Scholes being very vocal about the style of play.

“We’ve got areas on the pitch where I think we are slightly superior and we have to make that count”.

The Dutchman has been accused of moving United away from their traditional brand of attacking football to a more laboured style that yielded the second-fewest goals of the league’s top 10 teams this season.

“We are going to be the side that needs to fight that bit harder to win”.

Then I have to select the team and disappoint more players. They have their famous colours and the history, the iconic names that you would associate with Manchester United that we haven’t got.

Pardew said: “The jump we had in attendances form that final (1990) won’t be repeated because we’re nearly full house now – most of our games are”.

Van Gaal – who will have Marouane Fellaini back from suspension and Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian fit again – admits it will be tough to leave certain players out of the side but considers the occasion to be a vital learning curve for the youngsters in the squad. “But, of course, I hope we win though!”
