Google I/O 2016: Daydream Aims To Take Android VR Mainstream

Following on from the success of its makeshift Google Cardboard headsets, Google has decided that standalone headsets aren’t for it (yet) and so has produced a series of reference designs and specifications for devices that will make up its new VR platform.

“Brands are exploring bots that offer customer service or support and help them sell products and services, and Google will launch Allo this summer with a host of well-known brands such as OpenTable, Uber and GrubHub”, Forrester analyst Julie Ask said.

The messaging app takes cues from Facebook messenger bots, Snapchat, and machine learning techniques; all of which have been previously witnessed. “We can use the mobile platform to get the word out”. One of the key features of the app is called Knock, Knock, which shows a live preview of the video before you pick up the call.

Instant Apps is Google’s answer to the pain of installing phone apps you know you’ll use just once or twice, for shopping or booking a parking spot, for example.

The update provides an interface for users to choose which data source they want for a complication, allowing them to swap out, say, a calorie-tracker for a water-tracker or step-counter. While Cardboard works with a wide range of smartphones, the new viewer and controller are created to only work with handsets supporting Google’s upcoming Daydream virtual reality platform – initially designed for Android smartphones but set to come to other devices.
