Gennady Golovkin says he will meet Floyd Mayweather at light-middleweight

Mayweather is reported to fight two-time welterweight champion Andre Berto on September 12 and has received a lot of criticisms from boxing fans and pundits alike. Berto is of course one of the two names that Mayweather mentioned before and while most folks thought he was bluffing, apparently he wasn’t.

“It’s a pleasure and honour to be in this position and I’m lookinh forward to capitalizing on every moment of it”, he said. It’s two fighters who, without being racist, nearly nobody wants to see. Golovkin told Max Kellerman of SportsNation that it would be “the greatest fight in the world”. The undefeated Mayweather is expected to officially announce his opponent next week while Berto is waiting for the official announcement.

Berto (30-3, 23 KOs), who has experienced career ups and downs lately, was last in action with back-to-back victories over Josesito Lopez and Steve Chambers.

It is worth noting that Mayweather has fought above the welterweight limit before, doing so against Miguel Cotto in 2012 and Saul Canelo Alvarez in 2013. Gennady Golovkin is more trouble than he’s worth it. Floyd Mayweather Jr. might have picked Golovkin out if he had no punching power whatsoever, but he’s too hard of a puncher for Mayweather to be willing to face him.

A separate Heavy report added that if the 38-year-old Mayweather will win this upcoming fight, he will tie the undefeated boxing record of Rocky Marciano at 49-0. I think he’ll go the full 12 rounds with him, and for that reason it should be really interesting to see how the fight winds up.

One example is the UFC champ Ronda Rousey, who was very open of disliking the boxing star. Mayweather’s defense is unlike anything else in the sport, but Golovkin is the type of fighter who would go for broke if he receives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity against the best.
