Rich cards are new visual format for Google Search

Now, Google is beginning to add “Rich Cards” into search results, starting with a couple of different categories, and as of yesterday’s announcement about the new feature, results will start things off by showing rich cards for recipes and movies, with more categories planned for the near future. So, if you now go to google.com on your mobile and search for “Mac and Cheese recipe” or “Captain America:Civil War” then you’ll be able to see a gallery of scrollable cards on the top of search results. The company has introduced a formatting feature in Google Search it is calling “rich cards” that it says will give site owners a way to present a better preview of their content in search results. The “Rich Cards” are an extension of the previously launched “Rich Snippets” and are aimed at providing a more engaging and visual way to display your content. Users can tap on your rich card and view a recipe instantly. Carousels may end up containing cards all from one site, or from multiple sites.

Documentation shows examples of rich cards for events, products, and reviews, so it would be natural to see cards for them in search results next.

According to Google, the visual format helps users find what they want right away, which leads search users to what they are specifically looking for, in this case the recipes. And you would initially only be able to exploit this feature using google.com in English (other languages coming soon). While the rich cards are a huge benefit to users, they were also created to help attract more attention for site owners.

Google has also updated its Search Analytics offering with the addition of Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) data. The company has finally found a way to make its Search platform for mobile a lot more visually appealing than it could have ever been before.
