Brewers’ Chase Anderson holds off Cubs
Chase Anderson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and finished with 8 2/3 strong innings to lift the Brewers over the Chicago Cubs 4-2 on Tuesday night in Milwaukee.

Making his first start against Chicago, Guerra (3-0) gave up Dexter Fowler’s 15th career leadoff home run but settled down to allow 3 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings.
Cubs starter Jason Hammel lost to the Brewers for the first time in his career, falling to 8-1. The 37-year-old was a tough-luck loser Wednesday in a 1-0 loss to San Diego, allowing one run and three hits over eight innings with seven strikeouts. “I watched a little bit of the end of it in here”. In this one, the Cubs just ran into a pitcher who hit all his spots, and Cubs hitters didn’t display their usual patience, with only one walk.
“When he came in the game, I said, ‘Understand one thing: If you get out of this, you’re getting an at-bat.’ So, that kind of jacked him up, ” Maddon said.
After a guy named Chase Anderson no-hit the Cubs for seven innings and nearly put together a one-hit complete-game shutout on Tuesday, Jimmy Nelson shut down a lineup that leads the National League in runs scored.
Nelson Cruz homered and had five RBIs, while Kyle Seager added a three-run shot, as Seattle continued its dominance on the road with a victory over Baltimore.
Guerra mixed in his other pitches to keep the Cubs guessing.
They could have sent him to the minors or skipped one of his starts.
Junior Guerra went seven innings Thursday, striking out a career-best 11 to post his third victory in four starts.
Hernan Perez had an RBI single against Trevor Cahill in the eighth.
The Brewers held on to beat the Cubs by a score of 5 to 3. That does, incidentally, mean the Cubs have walked at least once in all but one game this year so far. Chicago is now 66-66 at Miller Park. Carlos Santana, Jason Kipnis and Mike Napoli drove in two runs apiece to back Danny Salazar, who struck out eight and gave up five hits in 7 1/3 innings.
With closer Jeremy Jeffress unavailable after pitching five of the last six games, Counsell went to Tyler Thornburg in the ninth.
“That’s part of the game today”, Maddon said.
Brewers: Braun was back in the starting lineup after missing the previous two games with a sore right wrist. He had back surgery in the offseason and the team has been cautious with his health.
Nats 9, Mets 1 • Unbeaten Stephen Strasburg struck out 10, Daniel Murphy homered against his old team and Bryce Harper finally got a hit off shaky Matt Harvey as visiting Washington routed NY. Counsell said right-handers Matt Garza (right lat) and Corey Knebel (left oblique), who are both on the disabled list, could throw off the mound sometime this week.

World Series champions the Kansas City Royals saw off the Boston Red Sox 8-4, the New York Yankees fell 5-3 to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Houston Astros prevailed 6-5 against the Chicago White Sox, and the New York Mets shut out the Washington Nationals 2-0. Regardless, it was Anderson’s best start of the season and a breath of fresh air after a string of bad starts.
