I am indebted to people of Tamil Nadu: Jayalalithaa

DMK chief M Karunanidhi thanked voters in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, a day after the results of the state assembly election were announced.

Jayalalithaa, clad in her trademark green saree, said that while 10 parties had opposed her even as she had no major tie-up, “I had aligned with people” and believed in God.

Given the six vacancies, official sources said each candidate may have to secure a minimum of 33 votes to win.

DMK headquarters “Anna Arivalayam” wore a deserted look with party leaders maintaining that the result declaration was yet to be made in respect of most seats.

Thanking her party workers, and functionaries of alliance parties, she lauded them for working hard for the victory. “In 2013, we [Congress] supported DMK leader Kanimozhi and helped her enter the Rajya Sabha for the second time”. Its alliance with more than a 100 seats, up from 31 in 2011, can now create a strong opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly; Sankaran says this happened due to its hard work. Probably the exit polls were based on those districts where the DMK has wrested the seats from the AIADMK, hence the exponential figures went wrong.

Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa became the first ruler in 27 years to retain power in Tamil Nadu. While early numbers gave an edge to DMK, AIADMK soon surged ahead but will be facing stiff opposition from Karunanidhi’s party which is pegged to win in 103 constituencies. Congress won one seat and is leading in seven.

C-Voter, Times Now: This poll predicts 139 seats for AIADMK, 78 for DMK+, 0 for BJP and 17 for others.

Neither BJP nor DMDK led by Captain Vijayakanth failed to make any big impact.

“The people are asking why the AIADMK government did not act on these promises in the last five years”, DMK’s former member of Parliament R. Thamaraiselvan told IANS.

Its interesting to see that while PMK with 6% vote share has managed three seats Vijayanth has not been able to convert his vote share into seats.

Jayalalithaa’s trusted lieutinant and party Treasurer O Panneerselvam was also leading in Bodinayakanur.
