Brian Shaw ‘nearing’ deal to become Luke Walton’s lead assistant coach

After firing Byron Scott and hiring Luke Walton, news on the Lakers’ assistant coaching front was placed on the back burner to accommodate for the excitement of keeping their 2016 draft pick but Saturday news about Walton’s future staff resumed. So a Warriors public relations executive thought it’d be amusing to tell Walton his first obstacle as Lakers head coach would be not having a draft pick.

The Los Angeles Lakers are nearing a deal with Brian Shaw to become the team’s lead assistant coach. As reported by Lakers Nation, Walton is reportedly trying to convince the former Denver Nuggets head coach into joining the team.

In the previous report, persistent National Basketball Association rumors suggest the possibility of Brian Shaw joining Luke Walton’s LA Lakers coaching staff. Shaw also served as assistant coach under Phil Jackson before coaching the Denver Nuggets.

It is quite a cruel prank to play on the Warriors assistant who got the team off to its historic start on the way to the regular season wins record of 73.

But Shaw was very successful as an assistant with the Lakers and Indiana Pacers.

Shaw, for the time, appears to have his mind narrowed down to Los Angeles, a place he’s been before over his coaching career.

Update: The Lakers are “finalizing” Brian Shaw’s contract to join Luke Walton’s staff, according to Mark Medina of the L.A. Daily News.

Also, Shaw’s calming influence helped the Lakers when O’Neal and Bryant had their feuds.
