Arnold was from the Dutch city of Rotterdam, according to his Twitter account, which was updated on Friday with a post that he had reached the summit on his fifth try. “By climbing the seven summits we want to prove that vegans can do anything and more”.
In the past two days, a Dutch and an Australian mountaineer have died of altitude sickness after scaling Mount Everest, days after an Indian climber lost his life after falling sick while descending Nepal’s Dhaulagiri peak.
The Department of Foreign Affairs later confirmed she had died but she still doesn’t know the cause of death and is waiting for news about Maria’s husband Robert Gropel, who was also injured on the mountain and is waiting to be evacuated. It was undecided when and if their bodies will be brought down from the high altitude and it will depend on the team and family members, Pasang Phurba of the Seven Summits agency said.
The death of Maria Strydom on Saturday was also confirmed by Monash University in Melbourne, where she worked as a lecturer. She had already climbed Denali in Alaska, Aconcagua in Argentina, Mount Ararat in Turkey and Kilamanjaro in Kenya. Attempts in 2014 and 2015 were thwarted by the natural disasters; he barely survived the 2015 quake, according to the Himalayan Times.
Mr Arnold was among the climbers caught in a deadly avalanche on Everest base camp previous year following a massive quake.
Five Indian climbers attempting to scale the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest in Nepal, have gone missing, Nepal Police said on Sunday.
Strydom was a finance lecturer at Monash University’s business school in Melbourne.
“Two-thirds of the accidents happen on the way down”, he said.
“It seems that people have this warped idea of vegans being malnourished and weak”, Strydom said in a post on the university’s website.
Dr. Strydom and her husband were attempting to climb the highest mountain on every content when she succumbed to suspected altitude sickness and died.
More than 350 climbers have reached the top of Everest this month from the Nepali side of the mountain while several people have climbed from Tibet.
