Plate umpire Rackley leaves after getting hit by foul bunt

The almost six-hour long, 17-inning game, was the longest in Major League baseball this season and saw a total of 42 out of a possible 50 players take the field. You could call it a pitchers duel, but it did not seem like either pitcher was especially sharp and there weren’t even dramatic defenses plays.

Vargas pitched 5.0 innings in his last outing, surrendering two runs and striking out seven in a 3-2 defeat to the Brewers.

“We were on the cusp of sweeping the Dodgers today”, Green said. “It’s great to steal one here”.

“I’ve faced him a few times, but I don’t think I really had much success against him”, Upton said. “It’s an unbelievable team win”.

Maeda allowed four runs and four hits in five innings, struck out five and walked one.

But Puig was still at second base when Carl Crawford hit a fly ball to left.

San Diego Padres second baseman Adam Rosales runs down a fly ball for the out on Los Angeles Dodgers’ Justin Turner during the third inning of a baseball game in San Diego, Saturday, May 21, 2016.

“I was going to wait to swing until he threw a strike”, Solarte said through an interpreter. He was a tough-luck loser in his meeting with the Padres last month despite allowing one earned run and striking out nine in seven innings.

Los Angeles chipped away at the lead in the top half of the sixth off San Diego starter Colin Rea.

Kenta Maeda allowed four runs and four hits in five innings, struck out five and walked one.

The Dodgers snapped a four-game losing streak, then boarded buses bound for Los Angeles and planned to regroup.

The next 8 innings proved to be as scoreless as the first 4 of the game, but nowhere near as boring.

“Tsao was unavailable. We continue to evaluate him”, Roberts said. Kenley Jansen was conquered by Melvin Upton Jr. for the second time in three days, this time on an RBI triple that tied the score in the eighth.

Dodgers left fielder Trayce Thompson made a leaping catch at the wall to deny Upton.

The bullpens took over form there as the game went into extra innings for the second consecutive day.

Dodgers: 1B Adrian Gonzalez (back) was out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game, but entered as part of a double-switch at first base in the eighth.

“In that situation, the balls were clearly outside”, Ellis said. It didn’t have the theatrics of a home run, but Solarte showed poise in his first game back and watched as Tsao threw four wide pitches to walk in the winning run. LA tacked on two more insurance runs thanks to a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice.

“I got confused”, Puig said.

“I was shocked”, Roberts said of the failed bunt. “We had the opportunity”. A walk and a hit set up Corey Seager to drive in a run with a single, cutting the lead to 4-1 and chasing Rea. It was Jansen’s first blown save of the season, and on Sunday, he was given a shot of redemption in the rematch.

“To have two outs and the wheels came off a little with Tsao”. When Andrew Cashner is activated from the disabled list to start Tuesday’s game against the Giants, the Padres could be carrying six starters.

In the ninth, Puig hit a leadoff single against Fernando Rodney and took second on a wild pitch.

Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (6-1, 1.57) is scheduled to start the opener of a three-game home series against Cincinnati, which will counter with LHP Brandon Finnegan (1-2, 4.44).
