He expressed regret over the “terrible plane accident” and offered condolences to the families of “heroes” who lost their lives.

The plane reported engine failure before crashing, officials said.

An air force statement said the twin-engine CASA-235 reported a motor problem before it disappeared. The aircraft was operated by the Colombian Air Force, who confirmed that there were no survivors.

The crash occurred in Las Palomas region of Cesar, some 800 kilometers (500 miles) northeast of the Colombian capital of Bogota.
