North Bay’s Mike Yeo and Team Canada will be playing for Gold on Sunday at the World Championships as the Canadians edged Team USA 4-3 in the semi-final this afternoon in Moscow.

In Sunday’s final, Finland, who have won all nine games at the tournament, will face either the US or Canada who are playing their semi-final later on Saturday.

Canada’s Duchene added an empty-net goal at the buzzer.

Cam Talbot shut the Finns out in Moscow, but only had 16 shots to save as Canada struck gold once again.

“Either way the last game of this tournament will be hard for both teams”, said Finland forward Leo Komarov. Canada would get the best chance early on Finland’s powerplay as Boone Jenner would get a breakaway but a combination of poke checking and defensive backchecking would give Jenner no real chance to shoot.

“We’ve learned a lot from our first game against them at the championship”.

Canada will play Finland for gold Sunday.

Sebastian Aho scored two goals, while Mikko Koskinen produced 28 saves to send Finland through to the title match for the first time since 2014, when they finished runners-up to Russian Federation.

The USA, played well over their heads, took Canada to the mat and lost by one goal in the third period. Although Russia has yet to win the tournament on home ice since the Soviet Union won in 1986, this is the eighth time they have won a medal in 10 years. Later that day, Canada beat the United States team 4-3. He made 30 saves in all, but said it was his teammates who did the real work, holding off a charging American team in the final minute with an extra attacker on the ice.

Russian Federation secured the bronze medal by thrashing the United States 7-2 to ensure they have now won a medal at eight of the last 10 world championships. Brassard, surprisingly, leads Canada in scoring with 11 points in 9 games. “In the last three years we have been champions, second place”, forward Alex Ovechkin said. “I didn’t have my best game against them, so I’ll be looking to play a better game tomorrow and to give us a chance to win”.

Auston Matthews, projected to be the No. 1 pick in the June NHL draft, scored for US, along with David Warsofsky (Devils) and Tyler Motte (Chicago Blackhawks prospect).
