Stiff competition: Huawei passes Microsoft as third-largest mobile phone maker
Market research firm Strategy Analytics released a new report, which indicates that the Chinese smartphone vendor Huawei has replaced Microsoft with its improved smartphone performance this quarter.

According to Oh, Xiaomi recaptured fourth spot, with 19.8 million smartphone shipments giving it a 5.8% market share.
Apple, in second place, sold 47.5 million iPhones, up from 35.2 million, and its share rose to 10.9% from 8.2%.
In the second quarter of 2014, Huawei had a 4.8 percent global market share and ranked 4th against rival companies Samsung (1st), Apple (2nd) and Microsoft (3rd).
Microsoft’s phone sales nearly halved from 50.3m to 27.8m, taking just 6.4% of global phone shipments, according to data published by Strategy Analytics. Huawei has taken its rightful spot as the world’s third greatest mobile phone company.
Most of the recent Lumia handsets launched by Microsoft were budget friendly or mid range models, but Microsoft hasn’t been able to attract more customers for its smartphones. Samsung maintained the number one slot, but saw its Q2’15 unit sales fell year-over-year to 89 million from 95.3 million on disappointing Galaxy S6 sales. “Apple outperformed as consumers in China and elsewhere upgraded to bigger-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models”.
Huawei’s monthly shipments have been growing at a very fast rate, as it has consistently crossed the 10 million mark since May; it is pretty much on track to meet its target of 100 million smartphone shipments annually.
These metrics come courtesy of Strategy Analytics.
Strategy Analytics’ report also suggested that the Chinese company had outrun Microsoft to become the globally acclaimed third supplier of handsets, after Samsung and Apple, of course. It now holds a 7 percent market share behind Apple (10 percent) and Samsung (20.5 percent). Xiaomi remains a major player in the China mobile phone market, but its local and global growth is slowing and Xiaomi is facing intense competition from Huawei, Meizu and others.

Windows Phone’s struggles are well documented, but the latest figures make even bleaker reading for Microsoft.
