A Massachusetts State trooper, also wounded, was scheduled to undergo surgery late Sunday night.

It remained unclear why Zambrano opened fire on Tarentino in Auburn, or why he fled to the Oxford duplex.

Officials say when police entered the bedroom of that unit, a closet door burst open and Zambrano opened fire on police.

The trooper is an 18-year veteran of the state police, where his duties include assignment to the department’s Special Tactical Operations Team. Zambrano, who authorities say had a criminal history, was taken to a hospital, where he died. “My pride is outweighed only by my sorrow for the Tarentino family and the Auburn police, and my concern over our injured trooper”.

The violent bedroom encounter came almost 18 hours after Tarentino pulled over Zambrano at about 12:30 a.m.in Auburn, because the license plate on the SUV he was driving was not registered to that vehicle, said Paul Jarvey, a spokesman for Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.

He was transported to the UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, according to The Boston Globe. Stanikmas said he was “distraught” when Tarentino left the Leicester Police Department two years ago to join Auburn because he was a “great guy”.

Tarentino is survived by his wife and three sons.

State officials said Zambrano had been released from the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley on November 1, 2013, after serving time on a list of charges, including cocaine trafficking, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and two counts of resisting arrest.

Authorities say they found a vehicle that Zambrano had been driving parked in the back of the building.

LOS ANGELES – Nick Menza, former drummer for the influential metal band Megadeth, died after collapsing on stage during a performance of his progressive jazz trio in Southern California, a family spokesman said Sunday.

At the news conference after the manhunt, Sluckis assured the central MA community that residents were safe.

“The threat he (Zambrano) posed to our community is now over”, Auburn Police Chief Andrew Sluckis said.

Long before Officer Tarentino wore a badge, he was a leader in his hometown of Tewksbury, Massachusetts.

His body was brought to the medical examiner’s office in Boston around 9:30 a.m. Sunday and later returned to a Leicester funeral home.

The manhunt for a suspect accused of fatally shooting a MA police officer has come to a violent end.

The state trooper who was shot by the man who authorities say killed a MA police officer is scheduled to undergo surgery.
