Sheldon Richardson charged with resisting arrest

This arrest came just a few short weeks after Richardson was slapped with a four game suspension by the league for a failed marijuana test. It wasn’t his first flunked test.

New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson was charged with resisting arrest and multiple traffic violations after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase in Missouri on July 14.

Police say Richardson was driving a 2014 Bentley as fast as 143 miles per hour in a high speed road race near his home in St. Louis.

When Richardson eventually stopped, police discovered a semi-loaded automatic handgun.

Meanwhile, Richardson’s arrest was news to the New York Jets as Dom Cosentino of NJ.com said the team didn’t know about the situation until Thursday after the incident was ran in media reports, NBC Sports has learned. “I would just like to apologize again to my teammates”.

Richardson, 24, was the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2013 and a Pro Bowler last season.

He was issued summonses and must appear in court on October 27 to be arraigned on the resisting arrest charge. I can relate to his state of mind though, the utter futility and despair that sets in when things are spiraling out of control and the only thing you can do is lie to yourself and the one’s around you to somehow make it not real.

Bowles, facing the first crisis of his career, clearly is frustrated by Richardson’s actions, but he still believes in him. Revis is back in the Jets secondary and brought Antonio Cromartie with him, while Brandon Marshall heads a wide receiving corps that is one of the team’s most promising in years.

On his reaction to the news on Sheldon Richardson… “This is something that can only be addressed by how I handle myself from this point on”, he said.

Sheldon Richardson is having a pretty rough month. “He’ll practice every day, and we’ll get him in shape”.

“This isn’t gardening”, Bowles said, with a smile.

But the onus going forward, Bowles said, will be on Richardson, who has now sacrificed the trust of his teammates and the organization.

– Dave Matter (@Dave_Matter) July 30, 2015To be clear, Richardson wasn’t suspected of breaking any laws with the gun in his possession. This was an extremely unfortunate and stupid mistake made by a very talented young football player, if anything this incident calls for the Jets to be even more supportive of him. “But at the same time, you want to try to help the guy as a person, without deterring from the [other] guys on the team”.

“Seeing yourself going from Pro Bowl to second-string, can’t do nothing but be disappointed in yourself”, Richardson said Thursday afternoon. Should he just be traded or does he deserve yet another chance to get his life together and focus on football?
