WXYZ reports Keith Rowley, of Milford, jumped into the water Friday night to retrieve a hat that had been blown overboard.

Wickersham said the heavy squalls and large waves made it hard for the Rowley’s friends to get close enough to throw him a life ring.

“Due to the high winds, they tried to turn the boat around and get close”. Also on board the boat on the time was a 55-year-old lady from Rochester Hills and a 38-year-old lady from Bloomfield Township.

“Once our deputies arrived and began gathering information, it was apparent that the operator of that vessel was intoxicated and he was taken into custody”, Wickersham said.

Three other people were aboard the boat including one Troy man who was handcuffed and arrested on an Operating a Watercraft While Intoxicated charge.

The Coast Guard spent Friday evening trying to locate the victim but were unsuccessful. His name is not being released at this time.
