Isner’s 40 aces let him reach 2nd round in Paris

This year, so far I’m really happy with the win today.

Last year Stepanek became the oldest man to win a match in Paris since 38-year-old Connors in 1991, having recovered from a crippling back injury that could have ended his career.

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka dazzled the moment he walked on to a gloomy Philippe Chatrier Court wearing a fluorescent yellow shirt but it was a while before his play matched his attire as he flirted with a humbling first-round exit on Monday. I’ll see what I can do during the first week, but I’ll try.

In the women’s draw, Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber lost in the first round.

That figure, just a shade under 40 percent of the 128-man field, easily eclipses the previous high of 41 from this year’s Australian Open and could have been higher if not for the withdrawal of 17-time Grand Slam victor Roger Federer.

The two-time major champion took the third set 6-0, and was up a break at 4-2 in the fourth when they stopped.

The Spaniard went 7-3 on the clay prior to the French Open to gain momentum following a tough start to the season and she began her tournament by beating Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 3-6 6-3 6-3. He fended off two break points in the final game and served up an ace for the victory.

“So bad, so bad”, he muttered to himself after netting a backhand as Nadal raced through the first set. The pair battled until the final set, with Murray looking to break Stepanek to stay in the match.

Monday’s match was at Court Philippe Chatrier, where Wawrinka’s almost flawless performance beat Novak Djokovic in the 2015 final.

The rain at the French Open has eased and the grounds crew at Roland Garros is now sweeping water off the court covers. His previous record was against Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in 2014; that match was over in an hour and 33 minutes.

It was, for a defending champion playing on center court, not the smoothest way to begin the defense of a grand slam crown. A retractable roof is expected to be delivered by 2018. “I’m feeling fit. My tennis is there, and I’m ready to play my first match tomorrow”.

It is still raining in Paris and French Open organizers have announced there will be no play at least before 1 p.m.

John Isner used 40 aces to move into the French Open’s second round with a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (12), 7-6 (7), 7-5 victory over 60th-ranked John Millman of Australia in a match played over two days. If the weather holds up, that is, because there is more rain in the forecast for Day 2.

Something similar transpired several hours later, when No. 2 Andy Murray faced an even greater deficit, dropping the first two sets against 128th-ranked qualifier Radek Stepanek, who at 37 is the oldest man in the field.
