China’s Huawei files patent suits against Samsung Elec
HONG KONG Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] on Wednesday said it sued Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) claiming infringement of smartphone patents, the Chinese firm’s first intellectual property challenge against the world’s top mobile maker.

Just a couple of hours ago, it was revealed that Chinese smartphone giant Huawei was bringing suit against Korean rival Samsung over smartphone-related patents. Huawei did say they will be filing suit in China and the United States but did not lay down any dates or tentative damage amounts or other measures, such as injunctions, as possibilities at this time. The details of the negotiations between Huawei and Samsung are still confidential (and much of the complaint is sealed and redacted as a result), but the usual talks appear to have broken down. It has been granted north of 50,000 patents, and according to the World Intellectual Property Organization, has topped the list of global patents filed, two years in a row.
Ding Jianxing, president of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Rights Department, said the company is committed to sharing its patents on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory licensing terms, but believes it is entitled to receive compensation for the unlicensed use of its technology.
A big chunk of Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s revenue comes from creating telecommunications infrastructure which the company also uses to fund research and development of different products and wireless communication technologies.
