AAA expects to rescue more than 350,000 motorists across the USA during the Memorial Day holiday travel period, with the primary reasons being dead batteries, lockouts and flat tires.

AAA estimates that more than 38 million Americans will travel this weekend – the second-highest Memorial Day travel volume on record and the most since 2005.

“Because the latter two are generally stable, movements in gasoline prices are primarily the result of changes in crude oil prices and wholesale margins”.

Memorial Day travel projections are based on research conducted for AAA by IHS Global Insight.

Areas in Northern California and their current gas price climate: Stockton- $2.69/g, up 1.2 cents per gallon from last week’s $2.68/g. Almost 89% of those expecting to travel over the weekend will drive to their destinations, which is an increase of 2.1% over past year.

Huntsville- $2.07, up 3.7 cents per gallon from last week’s $2.03. Four western states and Hawaii lead the nation in year-on-year declines for retail gasoline prices. As of Monday, the national average for a gallon of regular gas is $2.28 per gallon.

A new survey from AAA finds nearly 70 percent of drivers are concerned about the poor quality of USA roadways, far more than are anxious about traffic congestion (48 percent) and unsafe roads and bridges (36 percent).

But the global oil market will be the wild card in whether the summer increase will be sharp or tiresome, whether the Pittsburgh area will see $3 a gallon gasoline anytime soon. As oil production in the US has declined, production issues across the globe have come into focus as well, including short-term outages in Canada as a result of forest fires, and in the Middle East.
