Trade deadline day off to busy start

St. Louis has acquired Jonathan Broxton from Milwaukee, the teams have announced. The Brewers have agreed to trade the reliever to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league outfielder Malik Collymore. The 31-year-old righthander has more than 100 career saves, though he’s had a hard season with a 5.89 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings.

Broxton will also face competition from Steve Cishek, whom the Cardinals acquired in a trade with the Miami Marlins earlier this month. The Cardinals traded for former closer Jordan Walden last November, though Walden has missed most of this season with a shoulder injury, and his rehab assignment has included a couple hiccups. He has been much better of late though, pitching to a 3.09 ERA in his last 13 appearances. Lefties have crushed Broxton this yr:.349/.382/.524 (149 OPS+). Collymore entered the season ranked 27th by Baseball America among the Cards’ prospects, but he’s hit only.216/.326/.378 in rookie ball while making a move from second base to the outfield.

The Brewers are in full blown sell mode.

Milwaukee, which is nosediving out of playoff contention, would nonetheless prefer to not deal with the $2 million buyout owed to Broxton for declining his 2016 mutual option.
