Gas price drops to accelerate from Labor Day forward

Detroit’s average gas prices have dropped 8.9 cents in the past week to $2.73, according to the real-time gas prices Web site’s weekly analysis, released Monday.

Gas prices may soon begin falling to levels not seen since the Great Recession in 2008 to under $2.50 a gallon in California and – gasp! – to below two bucks nationwide.

While Buncombe’s average price was just under $2.60, some stations were already well below that, he said.

That’s why prices will typically drop come autumn, because winter gas is cheaper to make.

“We’re going into the most active time for hurricanes, and if we have a real big storm move into the coast or the gulf where we have refineries, they’ll shut those down”, Antrican said.

But after Labor Day, he said prices will decline noticeably, and predicts drivers will see $2 per gallon gas by Thanksgiving.

During the summer months, the summer-blend gas produced and sold at pumps burns more cleanly to avoid substantial increases in air pollution.

“The bottom line is, this has been a year of tremendous crude oil glut globally and in North America”.

The lowest price in the Harrisburg remains at $2.46 a gallon at Costco, Lower Paxton Township; Exit 77 Travel Plaza in West Hanover Township; and Sam’s Club in Swatara Township. “That glut is being transitioned into a refined product glut, which means much cheaper numbers for those products”, Kloza said.

Gas prices projected to dip below $2/gallon
