Obama: US to Cooperate in Okinawa Murder Investigation

Laying bare the complex politics of reconciliation and contrition, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday rejected the idea of visiting Pearl Harbor to reciprocate for President Barack Obama’s historic trip to Hiroshima later this week.

“Our visit to Hiroshima will honour all those who were lost in World War II and reaffirm our shared vision of a world without nuclear weapons“, Obama said on Wednesday.

Abe says that trip included a speech to a joint meeting of Congress and a visit to the World War II Memorial in Washington, where he laid a wreath.

“We consider it inexcusable, and we are committed to doing everything that we can to prevent any crimes from taking place of this sort”, he added. Abe says he warned Obama that it’ll be hard to realign USA forces on the southern island if residents’ trust is lost. I conveyed to the President that such feelings of Japanese people should be sincerely taken to heart.

A U.S. citizen, who works at the sprawling Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, was arrested for allegedly disposing of the woman’s body, Okinawan police have said.

“One of the things I hope to reflect on when I’m at Hiroshima and certainly something I reflected on when I was in Vietnam was just a reminder that war involves suffering”, Obama said after arriving from Vietnam. Should the State Department’s Harry S. Truman building, officially so named in 2000 under the Clinton Administration, now be designated with another name due to Truman’s atomic bomb decision just as President Andrew Jackson is being expunged from the front of the twenty dollar bill due to his authorization of the “Trail of Tears” expulsion of Native Americans? Shimabukuro disappeared last month after texting her boyfriend about her plans to take an evening stroll.

During his final public event in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday, Mr Obama basked in the admiration of hundreds of young leaders who participated in a town hall-style event.

No sooner had Air Force One touched down than the president received a tongue lashing by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“I want to make this a summit at which the G7 sends a clear, strong message to respond to all situations and contribute to the sustainable, strong growth of the world economy”, Abe told reporters earlier.

“I extended my sincerest condolences and deepest regrets”.

The trouble between the US and Japan dated back in 1995, when a 12-year-old schoolgirl was gangraped by three USA soldiers.

But the heavy United States military presence on Okinawa has always been a thorn in the side of the two countries’ relations.
