California mayors seek state aid to stem freeway shootings

The CHP, which heads a multiagency task force investigating the shootings, has not said yet if the wounded person was able to tell them anything and so far no motive has been released. Details on the victim’s condition were not immediately available.

The announcement came as the mayors of five communities located near the highways – Hercules, Richmond, El Cerrito, Pinole and San Pablo – were set to meet to discuss how to address the rising tide of violence.

One victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening wounds.

Most of the shootings have occurred on I-80 and Highway 4 in East and West Contra Costa County.

When asked the best case timeline for camera upgrades on East Bay freeways, Mayor Romero said this: “Actually I have no idea”.

On one stretch of nearby Highway 4, security cameras are going up to ward off the shootings. “We are also requesting that there be funding to allow the cameras to have the ability to record video”.

Investigators say it is the latest in a string of shootings which they claim are targeted and gang related.

Four people have been killed in the shootings since past year, and a dozen other people have been injured.
