Angels send CJ Wilson to DL, make no late move at deadline

After spending Friday getting several tests, including an MRI and Connecticut scan, Wilson said he may be headed for season-ending surgery to remove the bone spurs. Bone spurs have bothered Wilson in the past, and according to MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez, Wilson is likely to miss the remainder of the season.

Angels starter C.J. Wilson says he can’t keep pitching with an injured elbow and he may opt for season-ending surgery.

Manager Mike Scioscia said it was obvious from Wilson’s four-inning, six-run start on Tuesday that he was struggling with the elbow.

“There’s nothing much I can really do”, Wilson said. He has been pitching with the bone spurs since April, and said he needs surgery now because his range of motion has diminished and he is at an increased risk of shoulder injury.

Wilson’s statement came after the Angels announced that, according team orthopedist Dr. Robert Grumet, the MRI showed a “left elbow impingement secondary to arthritis”.

Wilson’s absence could open a rotation spot next week for right-hander Jered Weaver, who has been out for a month with hip inflammation. “I think it will still be as strong as it was in the first half”.

A healthy Wilson, a consistent veteran left-hander, would’ve been a valuable trade chip. He had a similar surgery in 2008 and 2012 and recovered well.

“The elbow is something he’s had to manage for most of his career”, Scioscia said of Wilson’s problem. “In this case, there’s no more elbow left to expire”.
