World Breastfeeding Week Celebration

Every year, the global community sets aside a week to draw attention to the vital importance of breastfeeding, not only in the lives of the most disadvantaged children but also in the strength of societies.

Since 2012, Montefiore has been recognized by “Latch On NYC”, a citywide initiative created by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to support mothers who breastfeed their infants.

Data provided in the 2012 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) and The Oklahoma Toddler Survey (TOTS, 2013) compiled by OSDH indicates that 85.6 percent of Oklahoma mothers initiated breastfeeding. That is why local health departments have banded together as partners of Central Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition to further highlight its theme for 2015, “Breastfeeding and Work – Let’s Make it Work”.

1-7, is a time to recognize that breastfeeding provides ideal nutrition for infants and contributes to their healthy growth and development, said Janel Rose with the Barton County Health Department.

“Breastfeeding can play an important role in the bonding of a mother and child, and in addition to helping protect babies from infections and allergic skin disorders, there are significant benefits for mothers as well”, said Dr. Bruney.

Breastfeeding Connections, a baby weigh station located at 607 Seneca Ave.in Oneida, is the site of a special World Breastfeeding Week celebration on Friday, August 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. New or expectant moms and their young children and guests are invited to attend.

“There’s health benefits for mom as well”. She said she thinks of it as a billboard communicating that there are many working, breastfeeding mothers out there who can use all the help they can get, “actually bringing the discussion into the open and not hiding it in a bathroom stall or under a blanket”.
