Weekend Box Office Report: ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ Flies To The Top
The Angry Birds Movie was #1 in the USA over the weekend, with an estimated box office take of $39 million. This debut is significantly lower than its 2014 predecessor Neighbors, which opened with $49 million en route to a $150.1 million domestic take and $270.6 million worldwide, from just a $28 million budget.

Angry Birds was also a chart topper in China over the weekend.
“Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” landed in the third place with an estimated $21.8 million for its domestic debut.
Though Civil War’s reign atop the box office was short, it will get the last laugh.
The movie showcased the memorable components that made the app so popular matched with celebrities voicing the characters, including Danny McBride, Jason Sudeikis, and Josh Gad.
This would be the third best start for a Sony animated movie, following Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.5 million) and Hotel Transylvania ($42.5 million). On the positive side, the film has strong critical support with a 90% Rotten Tomatoes rating and Warner Bros.’ exposure is limited since it acquired the film as a pick-up for domestic distribution.
The R-rated 70s-set buddy comedy The Nice Guys grossed $11.3m for a fourth-place spot. It should top “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” at $328.4 million this week as the 44th highest domestic grosser of all time.
Disney is continuing to have a great year at the movies as it now has three films in the top 10.
ComScore’s senior media analyst, Paul Dergarabedian, said the success of Angry Birds likely had more to do with family appeal and ingrained brand recognition.

The film’s performance mirrors its ranking at the box office in the United States and Canada, where it collected US$39 million over the weekend. It seems as if those going to theaters were all about laughs this weekend.
