You can build a variety of tools from materials you gather, and slowly rebuild a kingdom that was destroyed long before the game begins.

Square Enix has announced its Minecraft-esque RPG, Dragon Quest Builders, will be getting a Western release as the title is expected to launch on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in North America in October 2016. This year will see another experimental title for the series in the form of Dragon Quest Builders, a sandbox-style adventure with a heavy emphasis on collecting and crafting.

For those who may have missed the initial announcement, Dragon Quest Builders is a sandbox game set in the Dragon Quest universe.

Dragon Quest Builders is scheduled for an October North American release for the PS4 and PS Vita so far. It wouldn’t be a Dragon Quest game without one after all! The few survivors were robbed of the power to build and scattered around the world to live out their lives in despair and apathy.

Until one day, a new hero is awoken by the spirit of the land – one who will become the Legendary Builder, within whose fingertips dwells the long-lost power of creation.

Dragon Quest turns 30 this year, and where you might expect a developer and publisher to indulge in a little navel-gazing with remakes and anniversary editions – to be fair, there’s plenty of that too – Square Enix are doing something quite a bit different. The game picks up after an alternate ending for the original game, in which Dragonlord takes control of the entire world, and it’s up to the player to rebuild the world of Alefgard and drive the evil ruler’s forces back out.
