An Allen Parish man died Thursday after being swarmed by thousands of bees while hiking a trail in the mountains of Arizona.

A good Samaritan went back to where Bestler was and found him lying on the ground still covered with the bees.

His friend was able to run to the safety of a bathroom, and from there she ran to call for help – but Bestler had already been overtaken by the swarm at that point.

The first park employees arrived and attempted to approach Alex, but were forced back by the bees. He was “able to load Alex onto the UTV and remove him from the scene, still covered with bees, and a swarm pursuing”, according to a statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

The cop loaded Bestler into his vehicle and drove him to medics.

It was not immediately known what may have provoked the swarm of bees, and Enriquez said it was not yet known whether the attack involved Africanized honey bees, which are known to relentlessly attack and chase perceived threats in large numbers.

“I commend Sgt. Romer for risking his life trying to save the victim”, he said in the release.

“These attacks are becoming more frequent and I urge the public to be aware of their surroundings when out in these areas”, Arpaio warned. “Alex was transported to Desert Vista Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased”.

Usery Mountain Regional Park has been closed while park staffers investigate the bee attack.

Romer was treated for multiple bee stings and cacti punctures and has since returned to work, the release said.
