It took until Friday for the terms of the contract to be ironed out and United to announce the former Chelsea manager on a three-year deal, with an option to stay at the club until at least 2020.

Mourinho signed a three-year deal worth of £36million on Thursday after LVG was sacked after two underwhelming years at Old Trafford.

Shares in Manchester United stepped up at the opening bell as investors welcomed the arrival of new manager Jose Mourinho. “Manchester United belongs to a small group of clubs around the world where nobody can say “no”.

The news was greeted with delight by Mourinho, who expressed his pride at becoming manager of a club that “mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match”.

“And giant clubs must be for the best managers and I think I am ready for it, so I could say I am happy, I am proud, I am honoured”. He won the Champions League in 2004 with FC Porto and in 2010 with Inter Milan. “One of my great qualities is to not hold grudges at anyone regardless of the damage they may have done to me”.

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of José Mourinho as their new manager.

The 53-year-old Mourinho has been out of work since December when he was sacked by Chelsea after a tainted second spell at Stamford Bridge that brought another Premier League trophy but ended with his departure for “palpable discord” with his players.

United fans are understandably delighted to land such a big name after a dour few years under Louis van Gaal and David Moyes.

Mourinho was swiftly linked with the United job as pressure mounted on Van Gaal, the man he once assisted at Barcelona.

“Because they haven’t made the top four it will have made it more hard to attract big players but with Mourinho, they can probably now attract the players they want”.

Blomqvist added: “I think Mourinho is a very smart manager”.

“You only have to look at what he has achieved over his career to see that he certainly brings a winning formula”, said Yorke, who won the treble with United in 1999.
