Acquittal in Freddie Gray case will not alter Maryland prosecutors’ strategy

“To the people of Baltimore and demonstrators across America, I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace, ‘ ” she said at a news conference in May 2015, evoking cheers from protestors exhausted by what appeared to be the latest case of police brutality against an African-American male.

Both White and Porter wanted this lawsuit sealed.

That was the second and last time Nero touched Gray, his attorney said during the trial.

The plaintiffs moved to seal the suit, but Baltimore Circuit Judge Althea Handy denied the motion Wednesday. Glass has not returned calls for comment from WBAL.

Mosby, like the defense in all cases, remains under a gag order in regards to the Gray cases.

Other legal experts praise Mosby’s courage for going down a somewhat unprecedented path in response to alleged misconduct by police.

Williams also wrote that “the detention morphed into an arrest”, a view that Jaros said could prop up prosecutors’ argument that Gray was arrested without justification. “The allegations would have to border on intentional conduct to cause them irreparable injury”.

Freddie Gray was a 25-year-old black man. His death set off protests, looting and rioting. He signed the charging documents in the case. He had been handcuffed and shackled, but was not restrained by a seat belt.

The judge who acquitted an officer of charges stemming from the death of the young black man Freddie Gray in Baltimore says he acted as any reasonable officer would have. Officer William Porter’s case ended in a mistrial in December.

Mosby now faces the wrath of mostly white justice officials and would-be pundits following two failed trials.

“In some instances there was overcharging, as was clearly the case in the officer who was acquitted yesterday by the judge”, he said. “They usually investigate more thoroughly, and so I think that the loss of some of these cases may be in fact the fact that it was not investigated thoroughly”. He said he “absolutely” believed Mosby overreached in bringing charges against the six officers.

The civil action also names Sheriff’s Office Maj.

“She has the same constitutional rights as anyone to speak about matters of public concern, and, generally speaking, if you’re talking about somebody in the public eye, you need to show reckless disregard for the truth”, Espo said.

Assault was the first of four charges leveled against Nero.

After Gray was taken into custody, police found a knife on him.

Attorneys for the officers have expressed skepticism about that investigation, saying evidence submitted to them through discovery provided little proof that any such investigation occurred.

Bratton questioned Mosby’s decision to file charges so quickly after taking office.

Kelly was quick to interrupt the Black Lives Matter protester, telling him “there are zero facts” to support the charges against Nero.

Lt. Gene Ryan, president of the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police, expressed similar thoughts, charging Mosby with capitalizing on a political window.
