An estimated 700,000 more people will travel this weekend compared to a year ago.
“When you’re looking at 89 percent of holiday travelers making the decision to travel by road, we can definitely say Americans are getting back on the road”, Johnson said. AAA expects most US drivers will pay the lowest Memorial Day gas prices since 2005.
AAA estimates that Americans have saved $18 billion on gas so far this year compared with the same period in 2015, and prices are at the lowest levels in 11 years. That’s about 700,000 more than previous year and the most since 2005.
Michael Stephens and his wife hit the road Thursday, planning to travel via auto to Dallas to fly to Denver, then travel on to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for a family member’s graduation.
Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and is one of the most heavily traveled times of the year.
It’s expected to be a busy weekend on Colorado roads as hundreds of thousands of people are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend.
Mike Right, a spokesman for AAA says even though gas prices have gone up since February, Springfield is enjoying considerably lower gas prices than other parts of Missouri.
Many are already gearing up to celebrate the holiday weekend.
Chambers was a bit disappointed that Abilene’s prices had trended up recently.
“Since drivers have become accustomed to $2 gasoline, we can expect some grumbling in response to higher prices”, he said.
“It’s quite lower than the recent past, so it is good”, weekend traveler Nivedita Halappa said.
“With a lot of travel it’s always nice to have lower prices [and] save some money”, said Scott Shea of Essex.
