Free summer meals to be available for students
The Galion City School District, in partnership with the USDA, is sponsoring a Summer Food Service Program in Galion this summer. But during the summer, years ago there used to never be an opportunity for that.

This year, students can receive lunches at Crawfordsville High School, Dr. Steele Playground (Old Mills School), the Montgomery County Fairground Pavilion, Imperial Estates, Willson School and Milligan Park. According to Swartz, Clinton City Schools provided almost 20,000 meals to more than 350 students last summer, through the Summer Feeding program.
The Ansley school program will be having a Home Run Derby to kick off their first day of summer lunch on June 1, beginning at 11 a.m. Each Wednesday during June and July the school will offer fun activities for kids to participate in, all of which are also free.
“This is an outreach program for our children and families which demonstrates that we care about their nutritional needs”, she added. “So it really prepares them to be ready to learn when school starts”.
Learning and good nutrition does not end when school lets out. Breakfast is served from 8:00 – 9:30 and lunch is from 11:00 – 12:30 Monday through Friday.
“For some places in the community, the food program is their lifeline”, Sanders said. “We ask that kids coming for open gym will respect that and stay in the gym”.
To locate a meal site in Vermont, call 2-1-1 toll-free, text FOOD to 877-877, or visit hungerfreevt.org. The final list of sites will be available in June and distributed widely to schools and community partners.
Of the 750,000 meals dished up for breakfast, lunch and dinner to LA Unified students, more than 76,000 are served around dinnertime to about 140,000 students who stay after school, said Laura Benavidez, co-deputy director of Food Services. The school asks that those attending the lunch bring the exact change as they will be unable to make change. “We want to try to eliminate any hardships our parents may face in the summer”.
Transportation to the site is not provided and deliver may be arranged for those sites that are pre-approved by the state.
