Stan Wawrinka advances to round 3 of French Open 2016
Sloane Stephens isn’t beating herself up for not making the French Open fourth round for what would have been a fifth successive year.

“Nothing was really happening”, Stephens said.
“She was just better than me today”. He was twice two points from losing while serving and trailing 5-4 in the fifth.
Bertens, who upset Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber in the previous round, won the Nuremberg tournament last week as a qualifier. But Sock lost in five sets.
“And I think that’s a good indication moving forward that that’s my level and that’s where I’m at”. “It made me really happy to see that I could get through a tough match”. “But it’s definitely a little blurry”.
Connors was 38 years and 280 days old when he fell in the French Open third round in 1991.
“I was just trying to take it point by point”, she said. “I didn’t get chances to run around and hit my forehand”.
She next plays Irina-Camelia Begu, seeded No. 25, from Romania.
Japan’s Kei Nishikori maintained his impressive clay-court form to outclass Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3 6-3 6-3 in their second round match.
Nishikori next plays ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet. Kyrgios and Gasquet have met six times with the Frenchman holding the 4-2 edge.
The ninth-seeded French player beat Nick Kyrgios 6-2, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
An emotional Rafa Nadal announces that he has to withdraw from the French Open because of a wrist injury.
Wawrinka had to face similar struggle in the Australian Open. And she was unaware anyone thought this might be her final appearance at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament.
“Filet de boeuf avec frites maison et salade verte” – beef filet, with homemade fries and green salad – the two-time major victor replied in passable French. Then the Williams sisters in succession- Serena is drawn against Brazillian Teliana Pereira and Venus faces fellow countrywoman Louisa Chirico.
Andre Agassi and Michael Russell both made it that far in 2001.
Following a five-set win in the first round, Wawrinka again wasn’t convincing in the second round on Wednesday at Roland Garros, with a 7-6 (7), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Taro Daniel of Japan that wasn’t all that straightforward.
The 10th-seeded Kvitova was a semifinalist at Roland Garros in 2012.
The Czech took the first two sets 6-3, 6-3 before Murray found his rhythm and won the third 6-0. After 10 sets of tennis in his first two rounds, he sorely needs the rest.
Nadal got off a sluggish start but once he got into his swing, he was in control.
After 20 minutes of play, Murray – a two-time major champion and three-time semifinalist at Roland Garros – already led 5-0 with the help of two breaks of serve.
“It’s the only time when being old is OK”, Karlovic said.
Novak Djokovic treated the Roland Garros crowd with some great tennis shots on Tuesday.
A bit like old times, nest pas?
“These two weeks might be the most important in the whole season (for me)”, Djokovic said after defeating 95th-ranked Yen-hsun Lu of Taiwan 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. Williams hasn’t been past the second round in Paris since reaching the fourth round in 2010.
After beating 32nd-seeded Jelena Ostapenko in the first round, she advanced to the third round by beating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-3, 6-3.
Another Japanese player also is impressing.
Things are looking up for Simona Halep in the third round of the French Open.
She arrived in Paris following early losses in Madrid and Rome.
That’s due in part to Venus’ troubles at the clay-court tournament, where, now almost 36, she moved into the third round for the first time since 2010 by relinquishing only three games in 54 minutes against American qualifier Louisa Chirico.
With three of the top seven seeds out of the women’s draw in the first round at the French Open, there was no guarantee Garbine Muguruza would stroll into the third round.
Halep’s second serve is letting her down. Still 18 and playing in only her second major tournament, Naomi Osaka also has yet to drop a set.
