“Money Monster”, $15 million 4. George Clooney-Julia Roberts thriller “Money Monster” opened respectably with $15 million.

The film, starring Chris Evans as the titular comic book superhero and his fellow Avengers Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner, hauled in $72 million (GBP50 million) over the weekend (13-15May16), taking its US tally to $296 million (GBP206 million).

Actors Anthony Mackie, from left, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sebastian Stan appear in a scene from “Captain America: Civil War”. In particular, the piece with the webbing making up Captain America’s shield is very cool. Rounding out the top 5 is Blumhouse’s The Darkness, released under the new BH Tilt label as part of the production company’s ongoing experimental model involving an low-cost, digital-heavy marketing campaign aimed squarely at attracting die-hard genre fans to select titles.

Fourth place belongs to “The Darkness”, starring Kevin Bacon.

In limited release, distributor A24 also scored big with “The Lobster”, a dark comedy about relationships starring Colin Farrell from director Yorgos Lanthimos.

American action movie “Criminal” grossed 51.7 million yuan to land in third place after its release on May 13.

Next weekend sees the opening of The Angry Birds Movie, The Nice Guys and Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising. “It’s not competing with all the noise”. Hale and Pally are pitch-perfect as underachieving pool store employees and all of the other reenactors have at least one great moment (much like the movie that the short is based on).

The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Keanu, Barbershop: The Next Cut and The Boss made up the rest of the top 10 in a weekend that was down nearly 30 percent from this time previous year. That’s an “amazing” first weekend, Dergarabedian says. “It’s mostly business as usual”. Yet here we are, racking up the insane ticket sales, just the same. Where available, the latest global numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. It grossed $133,000 with an average of $33,000 on its four screens. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
