Improving Larson looks for first Cup win at Coca-Cola 600

Although the All-Star win isn’t a points race, it helps build enough confidence for Logano as he starts second beside Truex.

It’s no secret that the last couple of years have been lean ones for Roush Fenway Racing, a team that in 2005 won 15 races and put five drivers in what then was a 10-driver Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Kyle Busch has been on a tear in the races held on 1.5 mile ovals as he owns top five finishes in all those races including victories at Texas and Kansas. If he can avoid trouble early and survive to the end, Kyle Busch should definitely be considered a favorite to win the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday. Kevin Harvick is a three time victor and hopes to finally find some kind of quality in passing as he starts eighth. He’s won at the other 21 active tracks.

Joey Logano looks from the garage before practice for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup series auto race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., Saturday, May 28, 2016.

– Johnson has led 1,735 laps at Charlotte, the most of any active driver.

Meanwhile, NASCAR will look for Mother Nature to cooperate a little better than over All-Star Weekend, as the longest race of the season is now on tap.

After clear skies to open the weekend in Monte Carlo for Formula One on Thursday, race day on Sunday could become a slippery enterprise. Starting in sixth is his best start yet, as he still struggles to get his first top 10 of the season. Fast facts: Jones has won two of the three Dash 4 Cash races so far this season. Hamlin has 10 top 10 finishes in the last 11 races at Charlotte.

Qualifying was also unkind to several big names. In 24 Charlotte starts, he has 10 top fives and 14 top 10s with a high finish of second (twice, fall of 2010 and fall of 2011).

Martin Truex Jr. has been thinking about his return to the Coca-Cola 600 for an entire year.

If there is one track that Kasey Kahne has circled on the schedule, it must be Charlotte and the Coca-Cola 600. Drivers were among the many that were confused by certain rules throughout the night. Race distance: 600 miles, 400 laps. Look for a lot of red white and blue themed cars and fire suits this weekend.

Harvick is the current points leader and he is a two-time victor of this very event, last winning in 2013. We’re going to be on pit road a lot Sunday night and that’s certainly going to be an advantage.
