Atletico Madrid missed chance to beat Real Madrid, says Terry Gibson

Two years ago, the Portuguese superstar’s penalty had sealed a 4-1 extra-time win over Atletico and prompted the first of his provocative celebrations.

After seven successful spot-kicks in the shootout, Juanfran struck the post with Atletico’s fourth penalty and Ronaldo calmly converted to seal victory for Real.

Zinedine Zidane has now won the Champions League as a player, assistant coach and manager – all with Real Madrid.

A commanding display in the 3-0 win over Wolfsburg in the Champions League quarter-final second leg marked his return to form, and Ramos admitted after that game he had had a tough season.

Real, inaugural winners of the competition in 1956, claimed their 10th title two years ago in Lisbon when a late Ramos leveller pushed the match into extra-time.

“What an awesome feeling”, Real forward Gareth Bale said.

“The penalties are always a lottery, you never know what’s going to happen, but we showed that our team had more experience and we showed that we scored all penalties – it was unbelievable, a fantastic night”, Ronaldo told BT Sport after the shootout triumph.

What really hurts me is to see the hurt of the people who’ve paid to come here. I don’t know which defeat hurts the most. “The effort was really tremendous”. Just not the one that matters most in Madrid.

But there was no let-off when Bale headed on a Toni Kroos free kick and Ramos prodded the ball over the line.

Despite clearing up his future, Ramos endured a hard start to the season as Real struggled to gel under coach Rafael Benitez, and the defender dislocated his shoulder a month into the season, then suffering the same injury in November.

The second half began dramatically when Pepe clumsily caught Fernando Torres’s ankle in the area to give away a penalty.

A breathless spell followed as Atletico, leaving gaps at the back, had a series of dramatic escapes.

Real’s French striker Karim Benzema, who has not been picked for France’s Euro 2016 squad, suggested this result would make up for his personal disappointment.

Modric was involved again when Ronaldo shot straight at the keeper from 25 yards, and Atletico survived a huge scare when Oblak stopped Ronaldo’s effort, then had Stefan Savic to thank for clearing Bale’s follow-up off the line.

Halftime substitute Yannick Carrasco turned home Juanfran’s cross from close range to send the Atletico fans wild.

After his promotion in January, critics shouted that Zidane was not qualified and continued to point out every tactical error from that point forward.
