“‘X-Men: Apocalypse”: The Mutants Are Back!
For those who just can’t get enough of X-Men, the ’90s animated series is ideal. Apocalypse’s storyline is pretty boring. Oscar Isaac did a great job of acting through the make up and prosthetics, but the trappings of Apocalypse seem to harness him rather than unleash everything that makes him intimidating and scary.

Apocalypse, Marvel’s X-Men universe’s first and most powerful mutant, awakens after thousands of years of being trapped and is confused and disgusted by the current state of the world. However, once we saw Quicksilver on screen, the character quickly (no pun intended!) became a fan-favorite and stole the show.
Alas, we won’t be saying goodbye to the X-Men just yet.
Additionally, there are appearances by Olivia Munn, Lana Condor, Ben Hardy, and Josh Wellman. Definitely worked! Another character deserving of a spinoff movie. The score on RottenTomatoes is a paltry 28% at this time and when looking at the film’s performance on IMDb it’s well below where movies such as Maleficent, Oz the Great and Powerful and Cinderella were at the same point in their release cycle. Sophie Turner takes on the role of young Jean Grey, and the actress dominates in every scene in which she appears, not that that’s a hard challenge to take on here.
On top of that, the menagerie of mutants is over-populated for one film: it’s just too crowded and therefore too superficial. A very sweet moment in the film, but also a little corny. “Well”, I replied, “then let’s pick someone who knows how to fix it”. It’s like time stands still for him.
Visual effects were pretty much crap (guessing this movie is a disaster in 3D). I love Oscar Isaac, but he looked like a cartoon character and he wasn’t the least bit imposing.
They don’t look half-bad together.
Just like Peters, his character, Quicksilver, is also reflective of what he thinks of the scene.
Because of the muddled screenplay and the preponderance of special effects, it’s little wonder than the actors come across so poorly. Jump ahead to the year 1983 and En Sabah Nur is brought out of his ancient sleep by some misguided and foolish Egyptian locals and Central Intelligence Agency operative Moira Mactaggert (Rose Byrne) who accidentally expose his resting place to the powers of the sun. Jennifer Lawrence seems to be doing a walk-through as Mystique who goes around saving lost and abused mutants from mean and unsafe humans while constantly telling everyone that she’s no hero. Professor X and his protégés, including Raven/Mystique (Lawrence) and fellow blue person Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), unite to try to stop them. But the result was one of the most delightful and honest entrants in the franchise. Again, missed opportunity to create “Archangel”.
Then the movie levels the entire city of Cairo, leaving (presumably) many millions dead and injured.
“It’s the end of the world as we know it – because we’ve seen it in a dozen other superhero movies by now”.
In addition to Jean Grey, we met a young Psylocke and an even younger Storm as they fought side by side with Apocalypse. They didn’t even compare to the original Four Horsemen listed above. Meh.
She doesn’t use her powers in the film, but that’s Jubilee. It’s the fourth directed by Bryan Singer (he did the first two and returned for the 2014 iteration). And don’t worry: it’s a vague yet good kind of spoiler that will leave you thanking us later.
We’ve seen this scene or some version just like it in every teen film made in the last 50 years. Xavier’s school is gaining more students by the day. Ughhh!! LOL! How epic would it have been if they showed the Sentinels from the comics!
And because there are several technical difficulties in the scene, Peters required more physical effort as compared to the other stars in the movie.
Should you go? It’s the “OK one”. Watching the appropriately named X-Men: Apocalypse, it occurred to me that perhaps it’s past time to start having that discussion.
Havok’s death: Is he really dead? Gambit isn’t a main character, but he’s an important one; same with Mister Sinister, Sabretooth, Mojo, and literally dozens of others.
