The BJP and its allies on Thursday dislodged the Congress, which had been in power in Assam for 15 long years. Both in Kerala and Assam, the Congress turned blind eye to demand for change of guards because both Oomen Chandy and Tarun Gogoi faced serious odds.

 As expected, regional parties are on course to win elections in the eastern state of West Bengal and southern state of Tamil Nadu, while Congress also lost the smaller southern state of Kerala to a left-wing alliance.

He described Modi as “Making of Developed India”.

The Sena asked if “opening an account” alone was the motive, why did the entire BJP brass including Prime Minister Narendra Modi camp there?

The win in Assam, an underdeveloped state rife with ethnic and religious tension, is also significant because it shows the Hindu nationalist party making a mark in an area outside the north and west from where much of its support flows.

The Hindustan Times, an English language newspaper, has live updates on the results.

Reflecting the growing unease and concern within the Congress after its election defeat, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were today urged to don the role of “surgeons” to put the organisation back on the path of recovery.

While triumphs in other States are more than welcome, the party is convinced that it would require all hands on deck to replicate even a semblance of its performance in the 2014 general elections, when the BJP won 71 out of 80 seats. “On Monday, we are going to have a meeting with the elected members of our allies, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF)”, Sarma added.

The people of the Northeast have been impressed by his dynamic leadership and the initiatives Modi has introduced, Zeliang said. BJP leader Ram Madhav tweeted on Friday: “Those confused by media reporting be reassured: two priorities of d new Assam govt: Development n securing Assamese identity from infiltrators”. “This is good as it shows that the regional parties will have a larger role to play in the national politics in the times to come”, Thackeray said here on Tuesday.
