Alexander Rossi pulls off stunning upset in 100th Indy 500

The 100th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, and though we don’t know which driver will be taking the checkered flag, we know he or she will enjoy a bottle of milk at the finish line. Pagenaud has captured the last three IndyCar event, and that he has the momentum to bag this biggest event of the year. “See, this place was really, really tough to us”.

Hinchcliffe won the pole with a four-lap average of 230.760 miles per hour, and at some spots on the speedway the cars surpass 235 miles per hour, traveling the length of a football field in about one second. He was rushed to Methodist Hospital, receiving 14 pints (6.6 litres) of blood on the way, and emergency surgery stopped the bleeding. Harrah invited Nabors as his guest to the 1972 race and a chance meeting near the row of bricks with track owner Tony Hulman would lead to the question, do you want to sing a song? It took a team of trauma physicians to save his life.

The vehicle driven by Alexander Rossi is serviced during a pit stop in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 auto race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Sunday, May 29, 2016.

The two-time and defending champion of the event crashed out of the race during lap 64 when his Chevrolet-powered Dallara got loose in the corner of turn two, sending the 40-year-old Team Penske driver nose cone first into the outside retaining wall. He couldn’t get back to the front. “It’s a tribute to James’ commitment getting back in there”. But it’s going to be his first 500 and no matter what, there’s lessons to be learned.

After developing a system of tethers to keep parts from coming apart from the cars and flying off, engineers have been making further modifications. He hit the wall and his day was finished.

Hinchcliffe was involved in his own serious crash during practice before last year’s Indy 500.

“That’s why none of the leaders did it”, Newgarden said.

“The cars use gasoline, a highly volatile, explosive gasoline”.

“There were some teething issues and we’ve worked through that and we’ve found our feet and I think the month of May is good time to peak”, smiled Rossi.

“Another breakthough by the series to try and control fire and that sort of problem”. I had no idea I’d be in IndyCar, I had no idea I’d be in the Indy 500 and now I’m here, we’ve won and I’m at a loss for words. He had previously won the 2005 Indy 500 and his auto was one of the fastest throughout the 2011 race.

So Power’s got that going for him. Stuck without a ride, he made the decision to return to the United States to race and became the ninth rookie to win the 500 and the first since Helio Castroneves in 2001. Talk about a breakthrough in safety right there in our very first race.
